I guess it will take you two days: one day from Sydney to Adelaide, and one day from Adelaide to Alice Springs. For further information (fares and timetables) have a look at

If you have time I'd recommend booking a guided bus tour from Adelaide to Alice Springs (maybe even passing Uluru and King's Canyon): there are a lot of tours available and you'll see much more of the country because they're only driving during daylight and will stop at interesting places and over night - the train doesn't...

Unless you have a lot of time and money and just HAVE to take the train, it's cheaper and easier to fly. More time to spend at Alice Springs and Uluru.

About 3 or 4 days (guess). There is no direct line. You have to go to Port Augusta (near Adelaide) and change trains. I don't think either train runs every day.
