Conjuntivites is an extemely common infection of the eye. The are two types "Bacterial and viral". There are many medications for conjunctivities and if it isnt a recurring problem most drs will try antibiotic eye drops as they usually work.
In saying this as every-one reacts differently to medication due to their body chemistry what medication that works for one person may not work for another. Also if viral conjuntivities is diagnosed the treatment for this is completely different.
You dont say how long youve been taking the drops for, have you missed any of the prescribed doses out?.
GO BACK TO YOUR DR. and explain that the drops arent working for you. Your eye will be examined again and if uve given these drops a fair chance to work (3 days taking as directed) u will be given another prescription for something else. On ocassions medication in the form of tablets in conjunction with or without drops may be given.
Do not be afraid to go back to see your doctor as from what u have said he will beable to see u need different medication.

If any consolation i know exactly how your feeling as i had the same condition a couple of months ago. However as i was at work all the time i put it down to Hay fever associated with my asthma until it got to the point where i could hardly open my eye and felt like i had a hair or some foreign body
continually stabbing them. Only at that stage did i see my own G.P.

There is an herb you can get at the health food store called Eye-Brite. Get a few capsules...about maybe 6-10, open them up, and make a strong tea out of the contents. Pour the hot tea onto a compress and hold it against your eye. You can use the tea as an eye wash to flush the eye AS LONG AS it's not a grainy tea. It sometimes is, and you wouldn't want an abrasive to irritate it further. It is not a cure-all remedy, but it does help to dry up the eye and takes the edge off of the pain and irritation. I'm assuming you have already seen the Dr. and that your drops are a medical prescription and not visine or artificial tears.

Mild infections may not need treating and will clear up on their own. This includes the itching eyes of hayfever. The tears contain chemicals that will fight infections. But if the symptoms get worse or do not improve, treatment can be considered. It can be difficult to tell the difference between allergic and infective conjunctivitis, which is contagious; if you are not sure, visit your GP or seek advice from your pharmacist.

Cool water may help to soothe the redness and itching. Wash your eye with tepid (lukewarm) water, using a clean piece of cotton wool or gauze for each wipe. Clean the eye from the bridge of the nose to the outer eye. Do not share towels of flannels until the infection has cleared.

If you have to wipe your eyes, use tissues and throw them away immediately afterwards. Do not share your eye drops, and throw the bottle away when you are finished.

Do not wear contact lenses when you have conjunctivitis. If your conjunctivitis was caused by irritation due to wearing contact lenses, your eye specialist may recommend changing the type of lenses you use (for example from hard to soft). You should usually stop wearing lenses for a short period while your eyes heal, and your optician should go over the proper cleaning and handling methods with you, before you start wearing them again.

Antihistamine drugs can be used to reduce inflammation when it is caused by an allergic reaction. They will also treat related symptoms such as sneezing and rashes. Alternatively, or in addition to other treatments, drops such as sodium cromoglicate can be used to prevent the allergic reaction.

Infective conjunctivitis caused by bacteria is usually treated with antibiotic drops or ointment, in the affected eye. This is usually effective within a day or two. Note that not all antibiotic eye drops are suitable for use during pregnancy. Do not wear contact lenses while having antibiotic eye treatments. Antibiotics are most effective when a swab has been taken to identify the bacteria and thus the drugs best suited to treat it.

Conjunctivitis caused by viruses cannot be treated, but the eyes may be made more comfortable using an ointment.

In rare cases, when the cause has been proved to be an allergy, steroid eye drops may be given by an eye specialist. They must not be given in cases of viral or bacterial infections, because they can make the condition worse. Steroid eye drops are only given as a short term treatment and you will need to be carefully monitored for side effects such as raised pressure inside the eye.

keep using the eye drops u have, stop wearing make up as itl just aggrivate it more
you need to change ur bed sheets bath robe towels flanels etc and wash all ur make up brushes otherwise the infection will just get stronger even with the drops cos itl always b there.
To ease it a little use soft tissue paper with a little cold water and wash it out regularly.
u can always wrap ice cubes up (very well) in cling film and hold it to ur eye this will take the swelling down and should make u feel better
if ur tired or run down at all ur recovery will be longer, try not to get urself worked up and have a few nights really decent sleep (easier said than done with an eye infection i no)
good luck and get well soon

well first off DON"T TOUCH IT and if you do wash ur hands with HOT as you can stand it water. Next-unless those eye drops are from the doctor, then i recommend not using visine or anything like that. Go to the doctor if you can before it becomes infected more. Keep a warm towel/compress on it until u are able to reach a doctor for proper medcine. I hope this helps-last time I got it it went in both eyes and i was throwing up from all the pain. I learned not to touch my eyes.

Just use the drops (if they were prescribed by the doctor - if not, then go to the doctor ASAP and get the prescription strength ones), and try to keep your eyes closed as much as possible and rest.

A warm damp washcloth over your eyes could help.

By tomorrow it will feel better. I got it from my daughter last month, and it sucks, but at least it goes away fast. Make sure you use the drops for the whole time they are prescribed, though, or it will come back.

Feel better!

Pharmacy Assistant here...

In UK you can now get treatment OTC at your nearest pharmacy...it is called Chloramphenical eye Drops which is kept in the fridge, you get it generically or it is called Optrex Infected eyes, you should be sure that it is conjungtivitus eg an red itchy eye and normally you wake up with your lashes stuck together as reult of a sticky eye discharge...you should continue the treatment five days after your symptons are gone...and discard the remaining contents as they cannot be kept for next time, unless you want another type of infection....

I have the same condition. What you need is an antibiotic based treatment. You can buy Optrex infected eye drops from the chemist without a prescription, this product is an antibiotic. Hope you feel better soon.

You need to go to the eye doctor. Conjuctivitis is bacterial and needs to be treated with an antibiotic. In the meantime put a warm washcloth on it. But you really need to see a doctor. It could easily spread to the other eye.

try using brine (add a tsp of common salt in about 300ml of warm water). use a clean cloth and wipe ur eyelids slowly and sideways. this will get rid of the puffiness and sticky sensation. beyond that regular appilication of drops is essential. there is nothing u can do about the gritty feeling.

BUT HERE ARE SOME IMPORATNT TIPS:
1)NEVER TOUCH UR OTHER EYE , WITH ANYTHIN THAT TOUCHED THE INFECTED EYE.
2)WASH UR HANDS THROUGHLY BEFORE U TOUCH DOOR HANDLES, TELEPHONES ETC.
3)DONOT TOUCH THE TIP OF UR EYE DROPS DROPPER TO UR CORNEA, THIS WILL CONTAMONATE THE SOLUTION
