GO DEMS! It's about time America started making progress, even if it's only in one city.

Companies like Wal Mart gauge all the time, and enough is enough, so I'm very happy that this was passed. :)

Haven't enough businesses left that city already? david c, watch how many businesses leave Chicago now and avoid that place like the plague - do you know why david c? Because no one will be able to COMPETE in that city and make a PROFIT in order to continue in business...

Yahoo is biased - it's owned and operated by some Clinton buddies who made a pile in the late 90's on the tech boom. They were a couple of the few who did not go under when the tech bust happened... Funny, liberals don't like to talk about the tech bust - which bankrupted a lot more people than Enron or Worldcom or any of the recent ones... hmm, that tech bust, did that happen when the Serial Rapist was on the throne?

david c - thank you for providing more fodder to prove how intellectually inept you are... this socialist tactic by the Chicago City Council will blow up in their collective faces. Will you post another brilliant "question" on Yahoo Answers when they rescind this stupidity - because all of their businesses are flying the coop?

We have to wait to see if it indeed drives away business or is paid for in job cuts.
Will the poor of Chicago have to shop at smaller stores thus having to pay more for their needs? Is it fair that someone in a rich suburb pays less for necessities than the poorer Urban resident?
Minnesota passed an increase in minimum wage, decrease in Blood Alcohol Level. Hennipen county and the city of Minneapolis passed smoking bans as well. These Democrat ideals caused the closing of 12 independently owned restaurants within a year. These changes cost 650 people their jobs.

Wow. We really need to do a better job of teaching basic economics in our schools.

How many times must you have this explained to you? Increasing the minimum wage results in higher labor cost for business, which means either (A) higher prices for their products or services, (B) fewer hours and jobs, or (C) both. They're not just going to let the government cut into profits like that - they'll either raise prices to offset the cost increase, or reduce costs by laying people off.

So the people who make minimum wage will see a temporary gain (assuming they still have a job), but it will soon be wiped out by the ensuing inflation. Those who make more than minimum wage will be WORSE off, as said inflation erodes their purchasing power. Here in PA, we recently passed a law to increase the state minimum wage from $5.15 to $7.15. I forget the time frame, but I make considerably more than that, and for some reason, I doubt that I'll get a $2/hr raise to offset that, so I get screwed. Yay for me.

Mayor Daily, a democrat, was against this.

There is a federal minimum wage. One thing minimum wage folks can do to "earn a living wage" is to get some education and apply to better jobs.

Chris S's answer is the best.
