I read recently that " newspapers and specially TV news have the power, and use it, to change the way we see the news. And specially in cases of conflicts and wars, reading/seeing too much of the news can stop people of thinking for themselves about the situations and just take it like they see it" (paraphrasing)
It kept me thinking about it... so I'm looking for new input and ideas.
What do you think about this? Is good to kept oneself on the top of the news or sometimes is better to just know the bottom line of things that are happening and try to know more about it from other sources?

Yes, everyone needs to know what's going on.

Being informed is important...being brainwashed in pathetic. The worst thing you can do is become a "dittohead" - those ignorant, gullible people who agree with everything Rush Limbaugh says. The second worse thing you can do is watch "Fox News" since it's not "news" at all - it's nothing more than a propaganda machine for the Republican party. Our conservative-biased media is all-too-often unfair, nonobjective, and too opinionated. For real, truthful reporting and unbiased news coverage, I'd stick to local newspapers and PBS television news programs. You'll find no 'shouting heads' on PBS, only fair, impeccably balanced, honest, and newsworthy reportage.
Any professional journalist (which in no way include the crude, rude and unprofessional conservative mouthpieces such as Limbaugh and Shawn Hannity) will welcome lively debate which presents multiple sides to a news report. Limbaugh and Hannity are cowards who refuse to allow anyone else to have an opinion or freely express their views. These puppets of the Republican party are weak, unintelligent, pathetic excuses for human beings, much less the obtuse entertainment they try to pass off as political commentary. -RKO-

Well one thing I think is important, what is foisted off as news by the major players should be looked at with a most critical eye since one has to take into account the built in bias of the players...

Consider visiting the site: "The Second Draft" to see what I mean...

The folks over at News Busters are also worth looking after a supposedly major story breaks...

the problem with the news is it preaches too much doom and gloom on the world and not enough good and inspirational news and because of that it feeds hatred on the world what the world needs to do is stop cateorgrising people and treat everyone to the same level regardless of religion, etc and the news should stop making evil lies and minipulating peoples thoughts if you ask me evereyone should stop watching the news and be happy then hopefully the world will be a happier place.

No newspapers, press firms or TV Companies tell entire stories, or don't take bias. Whether they be left-wing, right-wing, middle market, whatever... different versions of the same stories will appear on different networks:

Example

CNN - Man dies on express train... driver blamed
ITN - Commuters encourage man to commit suicide

See what I mean?

I think that it is important to know what is happening in the world, and as long as people keep in mind that what we are watching maybe biased, i think that it is a good thing. I think it is better to be aware.
