First-year college english classes are usually a way for the professors to a) make sure your writing skills are up to par for college, b) scare you into realizing that you'll actually have to do work, and c) teach you proper writing guidelines for research papers.
Your class will probably involve reading articles or sections of a book each week, then talking about them as a class. You'll have to write both short and long papers about your class topics, and your professor will help you turn your several short papers into one much longer essay.
Best tips:
ALWAYS do the reading for class. If you don't have time to do the whole thing, skim the first few pages so you know what they're talking about, then spend some time going over the graphs/tables/charts/pictures and captions, so you're not caught off-guard in discussion later.
ALWAYS speak up during the discussions when you have a valuable point to make. The more you speak up when you do know something, the less it shows when you didn't do your reading on occasion and you keep quiet those weeks :-)
ALWAYS take advantage of your professor's open office hours to come in and get suggestions on your paper before you turn it in. Your professor knows best what his or her expectations are, and if you aren't writing at the level you should be, he or she would be glad to help you improve.

You'll have to read a few books, or works of poetry depending on what the class is on. Maybe you'll have to write a few papers.
The key thing they'll want to see is that you can read, understand what you read, be able to repeat it back in your own words, and be able to apply your own thoughts onto it in a grammatically correct essay. You'll need to show that you know how to do citations and that you can write coherently (beginning, middle and end clearly defined)

it will really depend on the professor. however, i'm pretty sure the main focus will be composition. college professors will grade you more harshly than high school, so be sure to bone up on your writing skills, especially the mechanics (grammer, organization). colleges usually have writing centers that you can go to for tutoring. i hope this helps and good luck!

You will have to write an information paper, argumentative paper, and a narrative paper. There are certain guidelines you have to follow. I ended up with a b in my class.
