that way you dont have to include the great ones that are no longer around in the same catagory as the ones that are around right now....................................

not saying that 1989 wasnt a while ago but by past I meant in the '70s...example the ramones, the clash , sex pistols ect....

Right NOW I think the Adicts (although they've been around since the seventies...)
Back then... that's harder...
The Velvet Underground and The Ramones for actually jumpstarting punk.
The Clash for music.
The Sex Pistols for attitude.
I think that makes sense...

The Dead Kennedys, because they actually had a message unlike many punk bands ... don't get me wrong, I love the Ramones as much as the next person, but they really had no political message or anything important to say in their songs... I just think that the Dead Kennedys did a good job of keeping everyone up on what was going on and they really got their voice heard...

The Sex Pistols were defintly the best punk band back then but the best one now would probly have to be Fall Out Boy i know fall out boy is more Pop/Punk but i think they have done their part to be considered Punk

Sex Pistols and for now...I'd have to say the Briefs. Although few people have heard of them, they are awesome. I saw them play live with the Horrorpops at the Beat Kitchen.

green day...definately. there are so many new bands today that said personaly that the biggest influence in there life to halp them to become a band was green day...so yeah 1989 - present....Green Day is the greatest punk band ever
