If you do not have any experience in websites, you have no business being a webmaster. You may, i am not sure of your previous skills. You must have expert skills in html, xml, php, ftp, cgi, and pearl. If you know these, then you must also be willing to help others with there problems. To go about this you should do the minimum : http://www.publisheraid.com/hosting/Become+Your+Own+Web+Host+in+75+Steps.html
Sorry i could not be more help. I was a host for a while, but my job became very demanding. However, you need to set a reasonable price. Sites now offer cheap hosting for a couple dollars a month. I do not think that you could make this your only job. Not enough money to support yourself in domain hosting.

Webmasters generally do not design sites, they maintain them and serve as customer service people.
You want to learn to design web sites. Check out school programs for designers. Try a college search that asks about major. You can find one at www.fastweb.com or www.monsterlearning.com. Also find people who do this for a living and ask them about it, it is called an informational interview.

You need to learn the basics HTML, or in another words hyper text mark-up language. This is fairly easy to learn but does not interact with users, it just does the basics of a website (such as color backgrounds etc.,) You also should become familiar with cascading style sheets or css. They give much more versatility with a site and learn Javascript, it is a scripting language that adds interactivity to your site. But if you wishto design something that let's the users add things you must have extensive knowledge in php mysql and other programs. ALSO YOU MUST HAVE A GREAT HOST! Nothing I mean nothing is more improtant than this! I suggest http://www.dreamhost.com. They are truly the best in my opinion. Hope this helps!
