The average distance between the earth and the sun is 93 million miles. Using the velocity of light given (distance = rate x time) find an approximate value for the amount of time that it takes a light ray to travel from the sun to the earth?

light travels at 186,000miles per second so you take 93 million and divide it by 186,000 and that's how many seconds it takes.

The Sun is an average of 8 light minutes away from earth. But, that is using the 93,000,000 mile average distance. The earth's orbit is an ellipse--like all the planets. So, sometimes we are closer (during the northern hemisphere's winter) and sometimes further away (during our summer).

it is just like figuring out how long it takes you to drive to town
if town is 50 miles away and you drive 25 miles an hour
you divide 50 by 25 and get 2, that is, 2 hours
you have all the numbers and the equation
