Hey, it's always better to be honest. If he is under age, especially, he should tell his parents. If he hides this and they find out, they will wonder how much other stuff he's not being honest with.

I know it's hard to be honest, especially to your parents, but it's the best way! They may be mad but they also know that people makes mistakes. And most parents would rather have you be honest then hide the truth.

They don't need to know, but why hide it. If he was driving their car - I can see why. But if it is his car, and his money on insurance - then he is taking the responsibility for his actions.

Otherwise, his parents deserve the respect of an explanation. Perhaps he should fight the ticket. I know that I fought tickets in CT and my fines went from $500 down to $35. They just don't have the time to prosecute, so they barter with you.

If your friend is still dependent on his parents or on their insurance....my best advice is to just tell them the truth and pay for the ticket. That is the mature responsible thing to do. The parents may not like the ticket but they will appreciate the honesty.

Paying the ticket will increase your insurance costs. You're usually put into a 'pool' and the rates go up slightly.
Best to tell his parents and get it over with. What are they going to do...kill him? So tell him to 'fess up. parents may be pissed but you're being honest with them. Oh...and when they do get annoyed, don't have him say "Well at least I'm being honest". never try and soften your guilt. That gets people even more annoyed.
Take the hit and get on with life.

He doesn't have to tell his parents if he doesn't want to. But his parents will find out if he is on their insurance because there insurance prices will go up.

If he goes to court he can probably get the ticket reduced. If your friends in a minor, his parents will probably find out. If he's an adult, they may not, if he handles his business.
