I just started this thing and what do the points do for me?

There are different levels: from 1 to 7.
You need points to get to the next level, if you just started it means you`re still at level 1.
You get points by:
- Answering to questions (2 points)
- If you vote a best answer of a question you asked (3 points)
- If you`re voted as best answer by the person who made the question(10 points)
- Log in to Yahoo Answers Once daily (1 point)
- Vote for a best answer (1 point)
- Rate a best answer (1 point)
But you also lose points by:
- Making a question (-5 points)
- Deleting a question (- 2 points)

points really don't do much. the more you get the more questions you can ask and answer.

Not much. You get more powers as you reach higher levels.
