I have the same phone. I assume you have the USB cord to attach the phone to your computer, and I assume you already installed the driver so that your computer will recognize your phone. If not then do that first.
Sometimes, when you plug the phone's USB plug into the computer, it may not register on the computer. What I do is unplug the cord from the phone's end and then re-plug it back into the phone.
When you say you can't change the format, from what to what?
I have transferred music into my cell phone by going to MY COMPUTER and then double-clicking the REMOVABLE DISK, which is my phone's memory, under DEVICES WITH REMOVABLE STORAGE.
Next screen, you will see a folder that says MOBILE. Double-click this and then you will see about 14 folders, one of which is the AUDIO. Transfer your music files into this, and photos into PICTURE folder if you want to as well.
Just remember that the music files cannot be of high quality. I think it only takes 128 kbps or less. Don't go lower than this; sound quality will be poor. CDs are 192 kbps. You can rip a CD with practically any media playing software. However, make sure you shrink the size to 128 kbps before you rip any CDs to your computer, by changing the settings under OPTIONS/PREFERENCES on that software.
Same thing with pictures. You will have to reduce the megapixels first.
Once you have 128 kbps music on your computer, open the AUDIO folder of the cell phone which I mentioned above, and at the same time, open up the folder which contains the music on your computer. Now just drag the music files into your cell phone's AUDIO folder.
To detach the phone, either turn the phone OFF or click onto the phone's REMOVABLE DISK icon in MY COMPUTER and then click EJECT. You should NOT just unplug the phone while it's still connected to the computer. You may damage it's memory.
To listen to the music, go to the MULTIMEDIA icon on your phone then go to SOUNDS. Your new music files will be here.
As an aside:
You may have noticed the RINGTONE folder. However, it will seem empty You will need to UNLOCK your phone to see the ringtones files, and you will also need to install the MOTOROLA PHONE TOOLS software. Once you have done both, you will be able to have actual music or sounds as your ringtones, rather than those synthetic "noise".
