I'm a 55 years old with magnificent hair. The thing is I have grown a trifle vain over it. I'm not vain about much, my ego is rather small, but sensitive. DAMM my hair looks good! I have found that women look at me and smile. Its beautiful I tell ya. I only have a little silver and the rest is light brown. I feel sorry for other men my age that have lost theirs. You see, VANITY has taken possession of me because of my hair. I'm still cute too! Because I hate being vain, yesterday I decided to get a crewcut. No more stares & smiles from pretty women. No more clinging to my youth. I said to myself "you might as well do it because your good looks are on borrowed time anyway." I went to the barber with every intention of having it all cut off. I got there, there was a sign on his door saying "CLOSED" I suddenly realized, my body was trembling all over. Was it a reprive? Was it predestination? What should I do? The barber's shear's await your decision. This is 10 months worth of hair

Why would you get rid of something that makes you feel good about yourself? Regardless of the stares and looks, you need to feel good for yourself. You don't sound "vain" to me-just happy about a part of yourself. Feeling good about yourself will make you a happier person and better to others. Enjoy it, yes good looks are always on borrowed time-so why cut that time short? I say keep your hair!!!

Well, it's personal preference, really. For me though, if I am ever looking at a 55 year old man with long hair, it is only because I am thinking, "Man, he should cut his hair!"

You don't have to go as drastic as a crew cut. You can look in books for alternatives. There are many ways to show off a gorgeous thick head of hair without keeping it "too long."

If you like it leave it alone!!! Everyone is vain and that is ok. We all need to take pride in the way we look or we would be slobs and smelly and gross!! :) My dad is younger than you and he is bald on top! The only hair he has is around the sides and that is grey. So be proud of your hair and do with it what you like, it may not be there forever!

If you like your hair & it makes you feel good about yourself, LEAVE IT ALONE! Why cut it? We are all a little vain. Be thankful for the hair God gave you & wear it with pride!

Post a recent pic and you'll get better opinions. Personally, I think that long hair is a part of a woman's makeup, unless you're a lesbian, and then you're not really a woman anyway.

I am amazed that all these people actually BOUGHT your story. Creative though it may have been, it was still pretty obviously a concoction. Or a delusion.

john s did get close to a worthy answer, if a bit extreme.

I would cut it. Short cuts make you look even younger. Since the shop was closed when you went, it made you think it was fate and that you shouldn't do it. The truth is you were undecided. Get it done.

As a follically challenged gentleman, I say leave your hair alone and enjoy the smiles and stares while you can. Nothing wrong with that.

Celebrate your hair. There's nothing wrong with knowing you look good. As long as it's not overdone, self confidence is sexy. If you cut your hair feeling as you do, I guarantee you'll have nightmares about it. Just enjoy enjoying it.
