You don't need to tip anyone in the United States. It is good practice, usually expected, and the right thing to do if they service is good, but you don't have to do it.

I usually tip about 20% for good service. I have been known to drop a nickel for really bad service.

Restaurants in Costa Rica automatically figure the tip in but I'm not sure about services outside of the food industry

Tipping was illegal in China 10 years ago.

In Iceland tipping is an INSULT.
