Crowne Plaza Hotel Chicago-The Silversmith seems like a good option...

enroll for free and map the areas you want to visit, there are always good price hotels and motels there, and some of them are vey good, if you are driving Travelodge has the advantage that you aprk your car right in front of your room, when I travel with a lot of luggage, that is my feature number one.
Some of them we have find with very nice pool.

You can't beat this... cheap, no frills accomodations right in downtown Chicago...
