And why do we call it soccer when the whole rest of the world calls it football? I'm tired of people making fun of me for watching the World Cup.

Because we have not really caught to the sport of soccer like we have american football, baseball, motorsports, and basketball but maybe someday if we were to win the World Cup and not get elimnated so soon in World Cup playoffs then there would be more interest

first off, its not all americans, just most of them
and its probably because way back when we wanted to conform away from british and spanish tendencies, and they both played soccer
pluuuuss
over the years, baseball has come to be known as "america's pastime" (even though it is now over taken by lots of players from cuba and such)
plus, we have football, and basketball to keep us more interested
also americans need action because we have short attention spans - - i really tried to make myself watch a soccer game but nobody scored in the like 20 minutes i was watching
i know that soccer goalies are good, but with the low scoring its kinda boring
its kinda like how hockey gets shaded a little bit -- there's not much action (minus the fighting)

football means your hitting the ball with your foot. so who ever made up that name for soccer is smart. unlike americans who call it soccer for whatever reason, i dont know.
i love soccer. its mainly a european and south american sport. anyone else wont understand it. europeans play it with a passion. unlike others who play for money or fame.
i love soccer. im glad that italia won the world cup. it would of been way cool to see Romania play a match. but they never made it that far.

Ah my sister and her boyfriend love soccer, so they care about and I know many other Americana's that do. The reason we call it soccer is because we already have another sport called football.
They're are many words that mean different things to different cultures. I don't see a problem with it.
