If possible, please state what generation your machine is, when you got it and whether or not it's died on you yet. Any advice you can offer to prolong an iPod's life is also very much appreciated. I'm doing this to make sure myself and others get the best info possible before we make such a big investment. Thanks! =)

I've had my 4G 30GB iPod Photo for a year now. It's been doing a great job playing my music and holding my photos. It's still up and running, iPods last for about 2 years. The battery is replacable though, you just have to buy it and manually install it.. Or you can always send it in and they'll replace and charge you.

It's recomended to first charge your iPod for 3 hrs right after it's taken out of the box. The battery does not have a memory effect (So you can charge it as much as you like), but, it's still good to cycle the charge once a month or so. (Waste most of it, then recharge).

Good job on looking up all the info before purchasing, very smart. Hope you enjoy your investment. Best of luck in the future.

battery life is about 1-2 years depends on how often you use and charge it.
the hard drive versions can last up to 3 years on normal use but can fail earlier if you drop/run with it. scratch up the drive surface.
the flash drive versions last a bit longer but can die from shacks from the usb ports. I seem this happen a lot pc with cheap USB ports.

I've had my 4 GB Mini for a year now and haven't had any problems with it. Unfortunately, Mini's are no longer on the market unless you find one on eBay.

The unit itself will last several years, assuming it isn't dropped or abused. It's the battery that will last only about a year.

If you but a warranty on it for like 2 yrs like I did. its better because it is an expensive investment, get a case for it as well as they get scratched very easy.
