I don't really know but I will tell you that when I was a kid, we were all at my Aunt's house for Thanksgiving one year. I was in the back yard with all my siblings and cousins and we were playing croquet. We had to put the game away before dinner and I had the job of picking up the wooden balls from all over the yard and throwing them to a cousin who was standing by the rack on the other side of the yard. One of my cousins who was 9 months younger than me, who had bent over in the middle of the yard, stood up just as I threw a ball across the yard. I yell, DUCK MIKE, he turned and looked at me and said "quack, quack."
Well you guessed it, he got hit smack in the forehead and we spent the rest of the evening at the hospital with him getting 12 stitches.

So maybe I am the reason they say heads up instead of duck.....or maybe it's Mike's fault. lol

it means look up and watch for something thats coming from up above. it doesn't mean duck, its more of telling people to watch out.

So they can laugh at you when you literally do what they said rather than following the meaning of the saying.

You have to see where the item is coming from and judge where it is going. Usually you look up because something is about to fall on you.
