Be careful with mace and pepper spray though. In some states and countries (like Canada), mace is considered a prohibited weapon like a firearm. And the girl with the pocket knife, that can be construed by police as concealed weapon. Your best bet would be for her to take a self-defence course. I've been in quite a few because of my profession and they're a lot of fun. Great workout too. If she feels uncomfortable taking one by herself, take one with her. It's all about joint manipulation and pressure points anyways, so you really don't need a "self defence tool". Good luck.

Try this site, it seems to have a full arsenal on self defense weaponry, stun guns, batons, alarms, pepper spray. Of course, if you're too scared to use any of it there's a waste factor included. She needs help with her fear as well as protection. Classes may be the best bet, because if you are really scared all you'll really do if approached by an attacker is freeze.

If she's trained to react with force, she'll stand a better chance of surviving with or without a weapon.

I usually keep a pocket knife, but since you're not open to that suggestion, I also get high grade Mace and keep it in my purse. Get the kind that has a dye in it. It will dye the perp's eyes, if there is a problem, so that he can be found again later.

Using two fingers will help. Marshall Arts will also build confidence and will help build her self esteem. Her fear will be gone. When I say two fingers, that is all it will take: Let us say her encounterer is very close to her and in front of her, the point and middle finger held tightly together can be used to hit that person in the neck just below the Adams Apple. When hit hard enough it will kill but used properly can render the person in able to continue the attact for lack of ability to breath, giving her a chance to get away!

a kubaton. It's small. It's normally just a 4-6 inch sanded dowel rod that is used in jujistu. It would give her a small reach weapon if the mace didn't work.

How about pepper spray? My dad bought me 2 cans of it when I left for college. He also made me practice the up to down motion when you're spraying someone so you can get full face coverage; And just to clarify I practiced on a fence, not him!

I have the same issue. My hubby works at night. Have a baseball bat nearby. Bashing someone's brain in or busting their kneecaps will add confidence. Trust me. Only to be used on burgelers, and such.
