I have a desktop that I want to transfer all the data to a new laptop. I don't want to buy Aloha Bob but want to use the Windows XP data transfer utility. I think I need some type of USB cable but what kind?

Use a CROSSOVER ethernet cable from one ethernet port to the other computer to computer. You may need to use the Network Wizard to configure a connection computer to computer. Ethernet cable has a faster transfer rate than USB.

Good luck.

buy a rj45 cable, and a cheap router, put them both in the same networ and in the same workgroup, then both of the hard drives on the desktop and the laptop are shared, you can then get data from the desktop to the laptop and vice versa

If you don't want to fiddle with cables, you can get yourself a nice flash drive and transfer the data with that.

as per first poster, if you are going to go down the ethernet route, make sure you specifically mention that you want a 'crossover ethernet cable'

a standard cable would not work (unless your connecting through a router or other such device which does the crossover for you)

As long as they both have an ethernet port (internet conenction) you can hook them up with an ethernet cable and share the files you want to transfer.
