Greyhound bus is the most direct and probably the cheapest.

Could take Caltrain / Amtrak but that will cost more and the schedule is highly limited.

Could take Caltrain / ACE to stockton then catch a bus.

Amtrak has buses leaving downtown SF that connect up in the East Bay. The cost is around $24 one way to Sacramento. The train is called the Capitol Corridor. The Sacramento train station is right in downtown near Old Sacramento.

You could also take BART from SF to Richmond, and connect with Amtrak there. But that's 2 tickets.

Greyhound also goes to downtown. It would be cheaper, but probably slower and more sketchy passsengers.

If you didn't have to leave today, you probably could have found a great airline deal. Needing to travel today, you won't even find a good Greyhound Bus deal. Can you drive there? That's about the best you're going to do without advance notice.

The bus. If Greyhound does not go between those two cities, there is probably a smaller independant carrier that does.

Go out to the airport and "hitchhike" one of the private planes going your way. And if you REALLY want to have fun, when they ask you if its your first time up in a private plane, say "yes". (but take an air bag because that means they are about to show off their flying skills)
