All American women I know can cook just fine. Some better then others, but we do fine! I don't know exactly where you're getting your figures from. You're making it sound like no American woman can cook, and I just have this feeling you have not eaten in every American home
Now I live in Italy, and we have been here for two years. I love the Italian people, I love European people, period! We've been all over Europe, but I have to disagree with you on women who cook in Europe. I've had some pretty scary meals here! Our landlords have had us over more then once for dinner...The sweetest people you'll ever meet...but the food they have made for us on a few of those occasions...NOT GOOD! As a matter of fact, the only place in Europe that I have been that I absolutely love the food is Spain. Now, my experiences with the food I've had here in Italy and some of the other European countries has not made me believe that European women can't cook. It just makes me believe I've either had food from a few that can't cook, or their taste and style in food is just different then my American taste.
I also have found that many European women are being taught to cook from very young ages. American girls don't seem to start in the kitchen at such young ages, which I see nothing wrong with. As a mother of two daughters, I'm not going to worry too much about teaching my girls to cook at a young age. I got married when I was 18, I couldn't cook to save my life, but here it is 14 years later and I'm a great cook! So my girls will probably end up the same, and if they don't...Well, thank God for McDonald's! Doesn't make you a horrible mother and wife if the family doesn't get a home cooked meal every-night! I'm counting down the days until we move back to the States (Two years left!) so our family can have those nights to pick from different restaurants and I don't have to cook!
I have a feeling my kids are going to grow-up remembering all the great times I spent with them, and not what I cooked them!

The reasons why some women don't cook is the same reason why some men don't. They were either never taught how while growing up or they just don't have an interest in cooking. With the fast pace of life today and the availability of fast foods, cooking can easily be ranked low on the list of need -to-know. Women have become more active in the workforce too, which has had an effect on your number of stay-at-home moms. A lot of our family traditions are being lost due to the demands put on us by our career and financial situations.

I think you can tell by some of these responses that cooking equates to slavery for the womens libbers. Another bad side effect of throwing the baby out with the bath water. In America we just throw money at things to avoid what we don't feel like doing. It's just easier to buy fast food for our obese kids. Most people don't have the mental capacity to put together a nutritious meal on their own. Many have never seen the inside of a grocery store.

It's a sad thing. Most women are too busy having a career to take care of their families.
It's a woman's place to feed and take care of her children and husband and in return, he works a job and supports the family financially. That's how it's supposed to work.
My mom is a homemaker and fixes breakfast and lunch for all four of us and dinner for all five of us when my father gets home from work.
And she never once complains. I for one am being raised to do the same thing so that when I get married, I will be prepared to do my job.
I live in the US and a Lot of the women I know are not cooking for their families. I guess for them and their families it's just microwave meals all the way.

I can cook anything, and do; however, when I left my ex he told everyone all I made him in 21 years was a tuna sandwich. So, maybe it's some misconception, but women in the US work full time so why would it be their job to feed the men and kids, we all have to pitch in, then of course there is fast food and take out and home delivery.

Why should it be a woman's responsibility to feed her man and kids? What's wrong with them learning to cook their own meals?

But to directly answer your question, women no longer can afford to stay in the home, but have to go out and earn a living. Between that and the prepackaged foods and fast foods available, it is no longer essential to learn how to cook from scratch.

Yes, it would be beneficial, but unless you're willing to do all that for yourself, you have no right to criticize anyone, much less a woman, for failing to do so.

As far as the Asker's "BTW", there are women misogynists, believe it or not.

You are badly informed. I don't know one female under 10 years old who doesn't cook scrambled eggs or a meal. Not everyone is the best a cooking, but that doesn't mean everyone in the US is horrible at it.

I know how to cook a scrambled egg and a good meal but what's wrong with the man helping out sometimes too.....especially if your sick...but without complaining it's not his job..sorry a little rant

if you both work though why is it the women's job?

In the old days, it was the womans job to cook. So they had to learn and teach their children. That is all they had to do except for clean house and etc... So they had more time to learn. Nowadays, women have full time jobs. Men should learn how to cook too. They are not helpless. My husband cooks and he thinks that men should share household chores. That is the way it should be....equal. Who says a man is better. Men are not too good to cook. So get over it and learn how to cook for yourself.
