A lot of self-righteous people talk about forgiveness and mistakes. Like in the question about nursing pedophiles and murderers.

But just once I'd like to hear from someone who has had a child raped and murdered and hear how they forgave. If they ever could.

Theory is all very well but even Yoko Ono admitted that she felt differently about the prisoners in the prison where Mark Chapman (Lennon's killer) is now. Her and John used to campaign for the prisoners but now she's a victim, things have changed.

I don't want to upset anyone. Just think it's all very well telling people to forgive when they haven't been through that same thing themselves.

I don't really think forgiveness is ever something that a victim can come up with on their own. They must have an outside force (most christians use God) as a means of obtaining the will to forgive. My exhusband used to strangle me till I passed out as a means of punishment, I have forgiven him enough to allow cordial conversation but have never forgotten... maybe we are mistaking forgiving for forgetting... just a thought. Best wishes

You can't forgive anyone for something like that if he doesn't show that he has totally changed and regrets it deeply... If that doesn't happen, why should you forgive in the first place? To forgive means to forget it ever happened (it's not just a word)... If you still feel a loss and are not at piece with whatever happened how can you expect to forgive?

I was molested repeatedly by my stepfather, and while I do believe he would not have done this if he'd been sober at the time (I'm convinced the alcohol drove him to it) I don't put myself in a position of vulnerability with him any more.

Forgiving is one thing. Forgetting is another.

I have gone through a lot of abuse, mental, physical, sexual and I have seen my ex step dad abuse the crap out of my mother, he even pulled a gun on us a few times...once at a family function with like 90% of my family there....and sexually abused his own son.....this was about 25 years ago and if I saw him today all old and crippled, I would toss his ass right out of his wheel chair and kick him!! Is that forgiveness? NOT!
