I know most of us (left and right) know that this isn't true. I know some argue he was taken out because he was an immediate threat, but not due to 9/11.

This is well and good, but focus on the question: Why, when polled, does the general populace believe Iraq attacked us that day?

I realize the poll is an older poll and that number is less now, but still relatively high when considering our leaders have even said there is no DIRECT link to the attacks and Iraq.

Just wanted some insight - Thanks in advance!!!

Because the "general populace" is stupid. Maybe that's too harsh- "ignorant" may be a better word. People tend to believe what's shown in the media, and feed into the hype (see:Y2K). Having said that, much of that may be because people don't have the time or resources to really research what's acutally going on, and trust in the media or the government to find out current events. Most right-wing media outlets (I'm talking about you, Fox News) as well as our current administration have pounded it into our skulls that Iraq is related to 9/11, what with their dictatorship and harboring of terrorists. Bush has said on numerous occasions that he has made the world a safer place with his actions. Given the current situation(s), only a moron could possibly believe that.

Sorry for the rant.

Well, people believe a lot of other stupid things, too. I mean, there's a certain percentage of the population that think the moon landings never happened, even though there's really no question it did when you look at all the evidence (and don't base your opinions solely off Fox specials, gahh...) But at the end of the day, ridiculous theories are still ridiculous theories.

Even among a sensible people, if you repeat something enough, no matter how inane, people will start to believe it. Republicans and their conservative media extensions at Fox News and talk radio have done an exemplary job at repeating things to the point that they are indelibly etched in the American consciousness.

Because people will believe what thier "leader" tells them. They are not competent enough to do their own research on the subject and they probably don't want to see the truth anyway.

Because the politicians wanted us to believe that Iraq was involved so that they could show a case for their illegal war
