Well the reason you need an invitation is you can not join with out one.
The reason it is popular is because much like google it is clean and easy to use. You get 2 GB of space. The spam filter is good. It also allows you to use Outlook type programs to check your mail with out having to pay for a premium service.

Gmail is the mail service from Google( Google is Well Known Online Search Engine). first time Gmail Provided 2 GB Space. there after its extending space for every second. now its providing over 2748.446306 megabytes Space. its not possible to create new account directly, i mean already existing gmail user has to send the invitation to create new accout!

gmail is a google's company.. it offers 2.5 gb ie. more than yahoo.. but u need to give ur phone no. and gmail team will send u a code with which u can sign up for a gmail acct. but 1 acct. for a mobile no.
but this service is available in limited countries.. all gmail acct owners will have some no of these gmail invitations, thru wich they can invite others to have an acct. so this is wat a gmail invitation is..
so.. who does wants to lose a 2.5 gb acct. so all running crazy abt it.. and there are many other features in gmail like chat enabled and only text ads and others..

Gmail is the free mail service offered by google, just like yahoo.
But Gmail offers 2 GB mail space where no free mail service provider is offering so much space. Most of all is this space is still increassing.
To open a Gmail you need to have a invitation. one cann't open the Gmail account like that.

Gmail is Google Mail. With them you get over 2 GB of mail storage. I have no idea why you need and invitation to it.

It is an email (like yahoo mail, hotmail,...) that is given by Google (u know google, don't u ??!). It gives over 2GB free storage. u can't get it directly and another one having an Gmail account should invite u. u get the invite and u can get ur account.

gmail is google mail. In order to get a google mail account, you need to be invited by an existing google mail account holder. google mail account has mail storage of 2 gb and the features of how mail is organized is slightly different from your ordinary mail system.

i think the invitation thingy is a rumor
gmail is an e-mail service provided by Google (you will need a cell-phone to use it)
