I missed about the 1st half of the movie. What happened in the beginning and what was the purpose of the suitcase at the end?

The first half of the movie introduces the temerity of the reporter (played by Kate Winslet). She goes to jail for several days because she refuses to give up the name of her source. Meanwhile, David Gale is sitting on death row and finally agrees to give a 3 day interview only to Kate Winslet because she's proven her trustworthiness (in his eyes, though the two incidents were unrelated).
He tells her his story about his activism against the Death Penalty, how he knew the woman he was being accused of killing, etc. Bitsy (the reporter/Kate Winslet) starts to ask questions and investigate and realizes that there are many holes in everyone's story. Eventually she begins to believe that he may be innocent.
The suitcase contained the money that David Gale demanded of Bitsy's news network in return for his exclusive interview. It was sent to his wife and son in Spain (his wife left him after a student falsely accused Gale of raping her; the charges were dropped but he still lost his job and family).
