The true Saxons were a Germanic people who were among the invaders of ancient Britain around the 5th century. In their homeland they fought against Christianity for a long time, but after a 30-year war Charlemagne overpowered the Saxons, forcing them to either convert and be baptised or be put to death (as was the custom of early Christians).

Other Germans who migrated to Romania during the Middle Ages were also referred to as "Saxons".
