Don't be scared. The test itself doesn't hurt. With your age it is better to have the test done and know everything will be okay instead of worrying. I had two done within 12 hours with my son because he was coming way too early. The test let the doctor know to what level his lungs would be able to work therefore, letting the doctors get the necessary things needed ahead of time. It also allowed me to get prepared for what may happen at birth.

Just remember it is your choice whether or not to have the amnio. No one can make you. Even with a 1 in 160 chance, that means 159 babies are born normal. I understand that since the blood work came back with a higher risk, that your doctors are pushing the amnio. I am 37 and pregnant with my 4th child. I had my 3rd at 36. My doctors pushed amnio, but luckily my bloodwork came back normal so it wasn't an issue.

You have to ask yourself is having the amnio worth it. What I mean is you need to talk to your doctors and find out what the miscarriage rate is for amnio at the place you will have it done. Typically it's 1-2%. But even with your 1 in 160 risk, that only calculates to a .625% chance of a baby with a birth defect. It's a lot to think about and you should do what feels right for you.

I passed on having an amnio and I was 35 when my first child was born. I weighed the odds...they can't do it until 5 months, and you can't abort the child then if there's a problem. Plus the 1 in 200 chance of miscarriage made me not want one either. I went with you get what you are dealt with...I had a perfectly healtht baby boy.

don't be scared. it is a very common preceedure. it should not hurt. just don't look at the needle. instead keep your mind on the ultra sound screen. they may be able to tell while you are in the middle of this what you baby is. but after the test come back about two weeks later you can know one hundred percent what it will be. 1-160 is actualy good odds b/c i had only 1-42 chance. and at the time i was 19 unwed and this was my second child. later i found out that it was b/c my boyfriend smoked pot and that can give you a faulse positive on these test my baby turned out fine. just keep in mind that you are doin this for the sake of your child god bless and good luck,

I had one with my last pregnancy. there is a risk of rupture of the sack your baby is in, but i got though mine with no complications. i was surprised at how painful it was. i felt it the whole time. the further the needle went in the more it hurt. but my friend had one and she never mentioned anything about pain. maybe its different for each of us? it does give you peace of mind knowing that your baby is going to be healthy and they can also tell you the sex as well. Just try to relax.
