When people are separated from each other their means of communication will change and develop as they take shortcuts with their language, discover new things, incorporate new words. And when they mix with different people speaking other languages their language will change even more.
Physical separation in communities is believed to have brought about language variation. For example a huge number of languages have developed from something called Proto-Indo-European so that a whole load of very different languages (such as English, French, Hindi, Persian and many others) are all evolved from the same language.
It's even been happening very recently - Afrikaans, the language of a lot of white south africans was originally Dutch, but moving all the way to South Africa cause the Afrikaans to slowly drift from Dutch...
Similarly Mauritian Creole is basically French, the colonial language of the Island of Mauritius, but because there were lots of slaves and labourers brought in from Africa, India and China the languages of these people merged into French to become Creole - which is now significantly different from French.

God told the people to go out and multiply and fill the earth after the flood in the OT of the Bible, but the people wanted to stay in one place forever. They built a tower as high as they could as their monument to this decision. So, in order to get them to 'go out and multiply', God confused their languages and they all went their way, with the ones who spoke the same language, to go out and multiply. I just wish some of you would STOP MULTIPLYING NOW!!
