The old pnemonic is "A pint a pound the world around".

Since there are 8 pints in a gallon, one gallon weighs ~8 pounds.

More scientifically, water has a mass of 1000 grams per liter, and there are 3.785 liters per gallon, which means one gallon is 3.785 kg, which equals 8.34 pounds.

The measurement of water depends heavily on geography:

In most parts of the world it will be approximately 10 lbs.
In some rebellious former colonies it will be around 8 lbs.

For a more exact number: pure water at 4 deg C is 1g/cc. 1 gallon is 4.546 litres = 4.546 kg or 10.02 lbs.

Here's a way to remember the weight of 1 gallon of water. A cup of water is 8 fluid ounces or 1/2 pound. So 2 cups in a pint and 2 pints in a quart and 4 quarts in a gallon so a gallon is 128 fluid ounces or 8 pounds.

Well I just looked it up and 8.35 pounds is correct. I guess a fluid ounce is not an ounce of water.

"A gallon contains the amount of ale the king could drink at a single sitting and weighs 8.33 pounds."
I guess there are different answers depending on what website you visit.
