I joined for free, an internet site to look up my ancestor, the one who was hanged for nicking a loaf of bread, and paid a fiver to search, which was 'valid' for seven days. I couldn't remember his name before the seven days was up Now they say my fiver has expired and no refund is possible.
I never actually used their facilities to look up anybody- How can my fiver disappear?

People need to be honest with you here. In simple terms you saw yourself off. Before you spent your fiver you would have been well advised to have as much info ready as possible; then you could have made good use of the facility. Try sending them an email about this misunderstanding; if they are decent (which many sites are) they may not refund your money but they may allow you another 7 days for free. However this time make sure you are ready to do the search!

Your fiver can disappear because you signed up for the site with those rules. What you should have done really was wait until you had all the information you needed for the search and then paid the fiver. It isn't fair, but they have taken your money perfectly legally I'm afraid.

I know the site to which you are referring and it was exactly this system of payment that put me off - I think they know that people wont be able to do all they want in the time frame and will waste a lot of what they have spent, it is a very sneaky way for them to make money in my opinion, sorry that you got stung!

Sorry bout that. The internets full of scammers... sometimes the only way to find out is to get scammed. Been there too. I got this "free" cell phone that I was supposed to get a refund for and I still haven't received it almost a year later. Be more careful in the future is all I can say.

you didnt pay for a search you paid for 7 days use of the site. they gave you 7 days use of the site. you didnt use it. Tis entirely your fault i am afraid. you have not been "had". also, while i am here, why is this under anthropology? perhaps you thought it was "an apology"?!!
