you knew that aspartame (artifical sweetner) was banned by the FDA for 16 yrs prior to its introduction because it could not pass a singel toxicity test? DId you know that aspartame is linked to many medical conditions and drug interactions one of them which mimics multiple sclerosis? Did you know that the CEO of aspartames maker (Searle) was none other than Donald Rumsfeld, who with the help of Ronald Reagan used political clout to get it on the market and block the FDA from acting against them despite a huge pile of medical research opposing it? Would you boycott aspartame products of you saw the research for yourself? just do a search on aspartame poisoning, and see. In the meantime, what would you do to help spread the word? Would you be able to give up your precious diet sodas and sugar free treats?

I don't drink that crap anyway, so it doesn't make a difference to me personally. This reminds me vaguely about the EMF issue. Each year, the gvmt pays one Harvard and one Yale prof 100K each to produce an article saying that EMF doesn't cause cancer. Nobody funds studies and the one study that links EMF to cancer was too small to be statistically significant.
If it were ever published that living under a high voltage powerline causes cancer, imagine what would happen to the real estate market.

I wouldn't be surprised at all if business considerations were at the heart of the aspartame controversy as well.

Urban myth. No truth. Debunked.

Evidence does not support links between aspartame and cancer, hair loss, depression, dementia, behavioural disturbances, or any of the other conditions appearing in websites. Agencies such as the Food Standards Agency, European Food Standards Authority, and the Food and Drug Administration have a duty to monitor relations between foodstuffs and health and to commission research when reasonable doubt emerges. Aspartame's safety was convincing to the European Scientific Committee on Food in 1988,2 but proving negatives is difficult, and it is even harder to persuade vocal sectors of the public whose opinions are fuelled more by anecdote than by evidence. The Food Standards Agency takes public concerns very seriously and thus pressed the European Scientific Committee on Food to conduct a further review, encompassing over 500 reports, in 2002. It concluded from biochemical, clinical, and behavioural research that the acceptable daily intake of 40 mg/kg/day of aspartame remained entirely safe—except for people with phenylketonuria.3

If you really think about it, very little out there is good for us. We are not going to live forever and everything that gives us substenance today will eventually kill us anyway.

For right now, regardless of how good or bad aspartame is, it is helping to keep my weight down, and I'm saving at least 500 to 1000 calories from drinking soft drinks with sugar (which is also supposed to be bad for you).

Well... Weather or not it is diet or regular, the key factor is that it is SODA! It is going to have unhealthy ingredients nonetheless.
People have that basic understanding that soda in general is bad for you. It is just like smoking light ciggarettes and smoking regular ciggarettes, your still smoking.
It is called an un wanted addiction and there is no real health measure you can take other than not doing it period.
