I've seen it asked here many times before but never gave much thought to answering.
Why do men see prostitutes?
Or
Why do women prostitute themselves?
Having given some thought allow me to indulge myself:
There is a certain honesty that exists between the involved parties. The woman is only interested in and wants the money.....and the man is only interested in and wants the sex. When the transaction is complete everyone goes home.
Many relationships have gone to the altar under the same premise, however the lack of honesty in the relationship caused a failure in the marriage.
Now before you gal's start in on me I ask that you go back and read what I've said. It does in no way mean all marriages. I simply feel that if you read what I say you will agree that it is an honest assessment to the question.
What is your answer to the question?

Very interesting some of the answers. For those that thought I answered my own question, I only offered an opinion for debate. To the guy whom seemed put of by my reference to prostitution as a profession, perhaps I could have said chosen vocation. I think some time’s street smarts should be given an honorable degree. Thanks for taking the time to participate in our lunch hour debate!

Women prostitute themselves for various reasons. It's kind of like asking why someone drinks or why someone is a cop. Some women are in it for the money; others are in it for sex. Generally I think you will find a deep desperation and the feeling that this was a "last resort". I cannot imagine most hookers do what they do because they are happy and living a great life.
Men visit prostitute for a variety of reasons too. There is the sex thing (obviously!) but there is also a certain level of control. The prostitute is there to serve the man's needs only; it is all about him and what he wants. Men who do this would have to have reached a certain level of desperation themselves.
GOETHE: A professional is not just one who makes a lot of money. Teachers are considered professionals, as are librarians, detectives, and consultants. Plus, a "professional" can also be considered someone who excels at their chosen profession such as a pro-ball player. If a prostitute reaches a certain level of success and masters her chosen field, why can she not be considered a professional? Heidi Fleiss was a pro, right?

Why bother to ask a question if you've already got an answer with which you're satisfied?
By the way, prostitution is not a "profession." To be a professional in modern society implies having achieved a certain level of education (usually a college degree, at least) that qualifies one for employment in a permanent position of relatively high status, with appropriately high income.
Examples of professionals include, but are not limited to, physicians, engineers, architects, accountants, scientists, concert pianists, and so forth.

My guess is that married men do it because they don't get it at home, or their not getting a specific sexual position....aka BJ from their wives.
A single man does it because he has no one. Prostitutes do it because they need the money to make ends meet or need their drug fix. Where I live there are two well known streets that are always in the local newspaper for prostitution arrests, Piedmont St. where the females hook and Portland St. where the gay men hook. Yes there are men prostitutes that you didn't mention, it's not just females. Either way it's nasty. And in my opinion I think money and sex rule the world.

I don't condone prostitution but, there are more reason then just sex & money involved somtimes. And maybe if some of the wives would do some of the things these prostitutes do, then maybe the husbands would not go to these women.

first of all, lets define prostitution. In my opinion, it is not limited to the women that stand on the street corners just for the money. It also is the women that puts out on the first date, and invites the male to move in with them to "share the bills". They usually don't have any emotional bond, but they are still putting out for money or services. Why do men do it? I am male, and don't understand it myself. If I have sex with someone, I have to feel an emotional bond with that person ( I am married), and it has to be special.

I figure a man sees a prostitute because maybe she will do thing the wife wont or he is just a dirty bastard!!
Women that are prostitutes are usually drug users or they just need fast cash.
If I guys want to pay for it and a woman wants to put out for cash...what the hell?

I agree that there have been, are and will be marriages based on sex and money only and if you are not honest going into it then it is doomed to fail and make both parties involved miserable.
I personally prefer a marriage based on Love as well as both parties being able to support each other and themselves.

Okay, it bothers me that several people seem to be condoning prostitution on the part of men, by saying "Well, if their women would satisfy them properly..."
That is ridiculous. Are men animals, that they can't control themselves? That is a sexist stance, both against women (implying it is their fault) and against the men that ARE more than animals.

Money for Sex... SEX for MONEY. It really does not matter. A man is as faithfull as to his options. If his woman is more than everything that he needs, and she is always there for him, he would not be going to see a prostitute. As long there is a need, there is going to be the demand...

yes- its HONESTLY SICK. most women who get into that "profession" have been mis-treated by most of the people in their lives (many times abused), so, they continue abusing themselves bcuz nobody ever taught them that they're worth anything. and the men who patronize them are sick and get off on looking at women as disposable objects. the exchange there is NOT just simply "sex & money", but rather her soul for his evil lust.
