Lots of reasons:

1) No photosynthesis in fungi.

2) Often fungi have multiple nuclei per cell.

3) Chitin as major component of cell wall in fungi instead of cellulose in plants.

4) Fungi are heterotrophs (like animals) rather than autotrophs (like plants)

5) Hyphae in fungi rather than shoots in plants.

6) Septae between cells in fungi.

It's not just chlorophyll - there are other photosynthetic energy production methods in plants. It's a total lack of photosynthesis that distinguishes fungi from plants.

Some fungi have cell walls (like plants), some do not.

Quote:
"Unlike plants, fungi do not make their own food energy via photosynthesis, but dine on organic matter like rotting leaves, wood, and other debris, or upon the tissues of living plants and animals."

Once, things were divided into two kingdoms, Animalia and Planta.

But on closer inspection, things were found that did not fit either category. Fungi is one, so they have their own kingdom. Mainly, they have no chlorophyll so they do not do the plant thing of making their own energy from photosynthesis. They get everything from absorption from the soil and other environments.

Fungi don't do the photosynthesis thing, they do not metabolize CO2 into O2, and do not produce chlorophyll. More like mold, a bacteria culture.

yeah, true. major difference is that a mushroom is composed of multicellular threads woven together and this way they grow, while cells in plant tissue are like bricks in a wall, ok. also chemical composition of the cell wall is different and this is linked to different metabolism - no photosynthesis, but feeding on decaying or living organic matter.

The same reasons lizards are not mammals. It is a different life form that is not as advanced as a leafy green plant.

Photosynthesis.

Simply because they're not photosynthetic, which implies a lot of things like them not having chlorophyll and so on. They live off detritus, junk in other words. So keep pooping.

They dont have the ability to produce energy by themsleves and they also feed off of other organisms to survive.
