A quote from http://german.about.com/library/weekly/aa042098.htm regarding gender of rivers..." if you're trying to remember the gender of a river, it's dumb to guess das because all rivers are either masculine or feminine—as in der Rhein or die Donau (the Danube). If you know the rule, you have a fifty-fifty chance of being right instead of one in three. Another good hint: most rivers outside of Europe are masculine (except for some ending in -a or -e)—der Mississippi, der Nil, der Amazonas. "

The is America rivers have no gender.

The name "Niagara" is said to originate from an Iroquois word "Onguiaahra" meaning "The Strait." The region's original inhabitants were the Ongiara, an Iroquois tribe named the Neutrals by French settlers, who found them helpful in mediating disputes with other tribes.

There is a nice story about a Chief's daughter associated with Niagra but that's it.

Okay. Now I understand your question. In English, there are no genders. In French, there are masculine and feminine genders. La flueve, the river, is feminine. But only if you are speaking French, to a French-speaking Canadian. If you're speaking English to an English-speaking Canadian, it's just 'the river' with no gender attached.
