There is a powder that you can buy at Home Depot that kills them and I think their little colonies. But it's real dangerous stuff; keep it away from your skin, and children/pets, husbands, etc.

If they are coming in from outside your home, find out where they enter and scrub the area with bleach--a strong solution or just straight bleach. This gets rid of the scent trails they lay down. If possible block the entry. I discovered ants coming in from the outside through a crack in the tile on the kitchen wall, at waist height! A little extra grout solved that problem.
Make sure there is no food (esp sugar and flour, animal food etc) around to attract them--keep everything sealed up or in airtight containers, and keep the floors and other surfaces clean with a disinfectant cleaner like Lysol or Dettol.

You must have some sweeties in your house cause that's what ants go for, sugar, put the goodies in plastic containers in the fridge so the little blighters can't smell them, there is a powder you can get from DIY stores, B&Q sell it and that is supposed to be good, hope you get rid of them, god I'm itching now thinking about them.

Leave some jelly out. When the ants try to eat it they'll all get stuck, and then it's just a case of getting rid of the jelly. Throw it in the skip or put it in a neighbour's mailbox.

There are some gell poisons that you can put out. The ant's come and eat it and take it to their nest. Then they feed it to their mom and she dies. Once the queen is dead, there are no more ants. I don't think they all work as well though and I don't remember the name of the best one.

Find out where they are coming in from by following them. Once you have found there nest tehn you can either use a spray or call the local council and get them to spray the area.

Local ironmonger, get some ant removal powder, put some out every day till they have gone, if they are outside, they hate the smell of turpentine, but, be careful its flammable.

I had ants in my kitchen in the flowerpot. It was enough to throw out the flowerpot with the nest. You have to find the nest and use some insecticide
