Throw out the stuff that's broken and dispose of what you don't use. If you have stuff you're not sure about, put that into a pile. Vacuum and clean everything in your room, Once you can see what space you have to work with, put your 'Keeper stuff' where you want it to stay, then decide what you want to do with your 'maybe stuff'.

A good rule of thumb is 'A place for everything, and everything in its place'. That should help you remain uncluttered.

Good luck!

You can transform a room design quickly, easily, and inexpensively by installing a modular closet system. There are many competing storage systems and products, so take a look at several systems before deciding.

There are two main types of do-it-yourself systems; those made of ventilation coated-wire components, and those made of solid particleboard components with a high pressure-plastic laminate.

Mixing solid-wood components with wire shelves and rod makes sense some cases, for instance…there are some items they want to look at and other they would like to store.
If you plan a system carefully, you can double the amount of storage area available.

It’s a good idea to have a few hooks but not too many or your closet will look messy. Slide-out drawers may not be worth the cost; simple and cheap shelving usually work just as well.

In addition to the usual bedroom closet design, think about under-the-bed storage, as well as under the eaves if you have attic space. But also think about smaller pieces like file cabinets, and freestanding storage.

A combination of drawers and cupboards, and open shelves with doors offers the most flexibility. In most cases the easiest way to plan is to start with a shelf or drawer unit somewhere in the middle. It often helps to divide a large closet in half or in thirds to make it easier to find things.

the most important thing is to go through and get rid of things. clothes you dont wear.. if you havent worn it in a yr, chances are you will never wear it. throw it out! have a sale or donate to a local organization. paper items always add up! get a file cabinet for important things and the rest.......throw out!! trust me.. you will enjoy your room so much more. less is more! im not sure how old you are but if youre an adult, get rid of stuffed animals and kiddy stuff like that. get a bin and mark it sentimental and store it in garage or somewhere. there are organizers at walmart but you can also make your own with baskets, shoe boxes etc. be creative!! put on some new sheets, lite a fresh smelling candle and enjoy!! :)

First: THROW OUT WHAT YOU CAN'T/DON'T USE and sell it, donate it, whatever.
Get some of those plastic drawers on wheels - made by Sterilite and they're three drawers in one tall (but not really tall) container. You can get 'em for like $12 at Wal-Mart. And they come in different sizes and such too, just pick the one that will work best for you.
And at Bed Bath & Beyond, and other places, I'm sure, you can get those wire crates that kind of snap together and you can store things in. They'll fit in a closet or just in one corner of your room or whatever.

Adding storage just makes is easier to be cluttered. Having less stuff is really the only way to become more organized.

Reduce what you own by %50. If you haven't used it or worn it in over a year, get rid of it unless you know for sure you need it. For everything you are uncertain about, put it in a box in the garage/closet and write the date on the top, if a year goes by and you don't open the box, get rid of everything inside of it.

Adopt an "something comes in, something goes out" rule. I.e. if you get something new, you need to find something to get rid of. Avoid just adding more and more stuff to you life.

(I am trying to convince my wife to do this, our house is very cluttered and getting her to get rid of anything is like pulling teeth)
