I suppose it is possible, but it is getting harder and harder to make a living selling travel. With more and more additions of online discounters, fewer people are booking with professionals and instead booking it themselves.

It doesn't take much anymore for someone to risk the quality of their vacation to save a few dollars. People will search and search to try and find the lower price and then once they do, they book it. That being said, it will be hard for you to have the lowest prices and still make enough money to survive. I would assume you would charge extra to be the tour guide, on top of the cost of the trip, or else you would have to live off of your commissions. You would have to find a special group that would be willing to pay more to use your services. Unfortunately, not as many people see the value in such service as they used to.

I would say you would be able to make a living doing it, but I don't think you will be able to make $50K, before or after taxes. The other problem is how long travel agents and other professionals in the industry will be able to stay in business.

The salary/remuneration for a particular job is the market value for a particular profession and designation at the city/town where the office is located. Job postings at websites like Monster, Yahoo HotJobs and Careerbuilder carry information about salaries. The Govt Dept of Labor, (www.bls.gov) Bureau of statistics has information about median salaries for different professions and details of additional compensation offered. Other online resources are salary.com and payscale. Your salary will also depend on your educational qualification and how you handle your career.
