The Hunchback from Notre Dame was written by Victor Hugo. There have been two movie adaptations and a television adaptation (1982) with Anthony(Hannibal Lecter) Hopkins as Quasimodo.
In the novel, Esmeralda was kidnapped as a baby by Gypsies. They in turn leave Quasimodo and he is left at the church were he is raised by an evil priest. At the end of the novel we know that Esmeralda is not really a Gypsy.
The Disney adaptation is not faithful to the novel.

#1: I like Gato's answer.

#2: Esmerelda is voiced by Demi Moore, who has a really cool voice. Not exactly my favorite actress, but still pretty jazzy.

#3: She was basically the only female character in the movie--gotta relate to something, right? Plus, she's a way-hot animated female with sass and charm. Plus gypsies got the whole "free spirit" attraction.

Other than that? I dunno, just another animated Disney character.

:)
