Where could I submit designs or illustrations for approval to see if I can be a fashion designer. I have a natural born talent for drawing and a lot of what I see in books I've been doing for years. I live in Charleston, SC. Can I do this without moving to a big city?

Associations may be a good avenue to explore. These organizations will address many of the thoughts, questions and concerns you'll inevitably have as well as many you haven't anticipated yet. See the source box for some relevant links.

Hope that helps! I wish you much success & happiness in all your ventures!

I would not suggest sending in your illustrations anywhere b/c someone is going to steal your ideas. It happens alot. Like if someone applies for a fashion job and shows there portfoilio to the employer, 7/10 times there ideas get stolen. If you want to be a designer, I suggest going to school for it. There are alot of great programs out there. Marymount University in Northern VA, University of Delaware has a good program. I went to that school and my best friend and sister were in their fashion design and fashion merchandising program. Alot of the students that leave that program go to work for Liz Claiborne, Vera Wang etc. You may have to move to a major city if you want to do this. If you don't want to move and can get a loan from a financial institution, then you can find a sourcing company that will take your designes and create clothes for you. Then you can sell them on-line or put them in local boutiques in your area.

If you just want to do illustrations you are going to have to know how to do CAD. You should take some classes if you haven't already and you also need to know how to use most Adobe softwear.

There is also someting called th Magic Convention that happens every year in Las Vegas. You could take some of your ideas down there and see if you can shop them around. Best case senrio is someone sees it and contracts you to produce a line of clothing for them, or they want your stuff in there stores. Check out their site http://show.magiconline.com/magic/v42/index.cvn

I hope this helps. Good Luck!

If you are just wanting to test yourself, the Art Institute of Chicago (they have many campuses around the nation) hold annual poster contest and fashion design contests as scholarships. You might possibly consider going to this school. Or you can join fastweb.com or www.scholarships.com to enter fashion design scholarships. You might want to save up some money for college or something too. This way you can figure out if you really want to pursue fashion design. Maybe you would rather like industrial design, or graphic design. These scholarship websites don't always want essays, sometimes they want artwork pieces. Have you heard about the duck tape scholarship. You have to design a dress out of duck tape and wear it to prom. There are so many weird scholarships out there. So experiment with it.

you try going out for Project Runway. thats one way to get your designs out there but you have to be able to sew. I have been designing for a while to but my sewing sucks. i have been looking for a way to get professional sewing instruction. but in your case if you can sew try getting a job at smaller labels. if they're good designs then they'll hire you
