Hi,
I have 2 turtles. They are red ear sliders. I've had them since they were babies size of a quarter. They both grew up together, ate the same food, same amount of food, etc. Yet one of them is significantly bigger than the other one. I would say about 40 % bigger. Why is this?
And also, how can you tell the sex of a turtle?
And one more...Can I take them outside and let them swim in a small size pool for few hours, just for fun and exercise? thank you

Let's start with sexing the turtles-

MALE- long, skinny tail; in-curved belly
FEMALE- short, wide tail; flat or outcurved belly

We see size differences in turtles- the female is often bigger. Also, if there is any competition or territoriality between them (common in small tanks), the dominant one will stress and bully the smaller one, and eat at least some of its food.

Outside is usually good, but be sure they have the right cares out there, and are either being watched well or are well-fenced (and remember that they can climb many fences!)

However, shuttling them back and forth all the time is mildly stressful. You need to balance the benefits of being outside with the stress from moving them. If the pool is small, filthy, too hot or too cold, etc., it will add to the stress.

On the other hand, if the pool is big, warm, has good basking, is clean, and is generally good to be in- go for it!

With turtles, the females are typically larger to help accomodate the production of eggs. Therefore I would say that it is a difference of the sexes that you have. As for exercise, you would need to find out if the type of turtles you have and what they need. If they are not water turtles, putting them in water would be bad, but so long as they are water turtles a pool would be great for them.

They may be male and female. U can tell by the size of the tales and how pointy they r. Males r long and pointy while females r short and stubby. If u let them swim outside make sure the water is ok for them and there are no pretitors around. If u let them out for a long time make sure there is a barrier aroun it so they can not escape. Good luck!

That's natural all turtles aren't the same size.

You don't want to know how you find out if they are boys or girls. You have to stick your finger up their ______ and if you feel something, it's a boy.

Let them swim outside but I would make sure they can't escape.

The 2 most likely reasons would be:
1) one is female (larger) and one is a male (smaller)
2) one is hogging the food & dominating the other.

I would bet it is #2 & that means you need a larger aquarium, preferably a pond!
