I have installed vice city (legally) and have been playing it without problems for about 2 years. Recently i have been having a problem. I load up the executable (.exe) gamefile, however, my monitor goes into standby, as if it was not receiving a signal from the computer, however, if i switch to any other application or show the desktop, the screen turns back on.
What is causing this and how can it be fixed?

Try to reinstall it, and update or reinstall your screen card driver.

Good Luck

The very first thing you should do is check your video drivers and see if they are all up to date. Also check the net for any new patches for GTA:VC, because sometimes errors such as this might be fixable with an update. You should also run the usual system check tools such as scan disk, disk defragmenter, and of course a virus/mal-ware scan. These things seem very elementary but they can fix problems such as this. If you have already tried all of these and none of them work, then read further:

-Problems like these tend to stem from having installed something on your computer that causes conflicts. Think back to anything you have installed recently that might use the same resources that GTA:VC uses. There is a strong possibility that any one of those things may be causing a conflict with your computer's ability to run GTA.

-Another thing to do is test your system by installing a different game on your computer that uses your graphics card. If your computer does the same thing on that, then it is definitely not GTA:VC's fault and you definitely will have to look into software causing conflicts.

-If you have tried looking into everything from the software end, it may be a hardware problem. You should contact someone who can help you in figuring out if your video hardware has gone bad. Who that might be is beyond me.

-A full system wipe/reformat will almost always fix a problem like this, but use this only as a last resort.
