NO.
The AAP recommends that babies under 6 months old receive NOTHING but breastmilk and water.
Giving babies this young water can make them SERIOUSLY ill. Boiling it or using bottled water makes not difference.

"Too much water can even be dangerous: In rare cases, infants have died from water intoxication, and others have developed seizures or hypothermia. Almost all of these babies were bottle-fed."

Water intoxication is SERIOUS. DO NOT give a very young baby ANY water. (See aliza1999's post!)

Another reason not to give a young baby water is that it fills them up with empty calories. They need FOOD to grow big quickly. Formula or breastmilk is mostly water! It should be all the liquid baby needs!

Mother of 3...ages 10yrs, 6yrs, and 2 months. I was the paranoid DO IT RIGHT mother on the first child...but after the second and third I have become much more relaxed..it's WATER...for real though...I have give my two month old water straight from my sink...I have given him water from a store bought bottle (spring water) I have three healthy sons...it doesn't make a difference...
doctors just read and studied a lot and really want to sound smart...like the sleeping habits...they say lay them on their back NOW...due to SIDS...my last two have slept on the tummies..WHY? because my second child woke up GAGGING in his spit up laying on his back...IF I had NOT woke up and heard him, he could have drowned...doctors don't ALWAYS know whats best....you do whats best for you and your baby...what ever YOU are comfortable with. As long as you are NOT substituting water for formular.

It's water...we drink it and we are fine...if u are bottle feeding, the formula has all it needs in THAT...if you are breast feeding...IT has all it needs in that...it's not like you are going outside to a mud puddle....

and if you are asking about giving ur baby water in between meals...I would not do it every time between every bottle...it may fill the baby up and he/she would not be hungery enough to take a bottle/ breast milk....baby NEEDS the bottle.breast milk MORE then water cause it does have all the things a baby needs...it does not hurt though to give your baby water...I give my two month old water every other day...about 1-2 ounces in a bottle...I mean if he fusses...and he HAS had his bottle...he is not dirty...talking and playing with him is not working or he won't sleep...don't YOU get thirsty between meals sometimes or throat gets dry? for 1-6mos a couple ounces will NOT hurt him. I have done it will ALL three of mine.

Yes you can. I boiled everything with my first child. I wouldn't boil the water..do boil the bottle nipples though. She'll be just fine.
People are way to freaked out about what they give their babies. I used tap water for both my kids's formula. I never baught any special water or anythng like that. It's unnecessary and it's a waist of money. I guess if you have enough money to afford "nursery" water, PLUS formula, PLUS diapers and everything else that goes along with having babies, then go right ahead. But the general public doesn't.

If you mean just water not mixed with formula then no. Babies shouldn't have just water at this point as it dilutes the salt and electrolytes in the blood stream and can cause dehydration and can cause problems with their kidneys. If you mean to use the water to mix with formula, tap water is actually best and if you have city water (not well water) it is perfectly safe and you don't need to boil it. I was boiling the water for my daughter at 2 months (breastfeeding but supplementing with a bottle so Dad could feed her too as I wasn't making enough milk to pump) and asked the pediatrician when I could stop boiling the water. He said now, that city water is very clean. I also asked him about bottled water and he said no bottled water. City water has much stricter rules for how they prepare their water than the bottled water companies do. This means the city water is much better for you (and your baby) than the bottled water, plus it has fluoride.

Did you mean to use to mix with formula or just to give plain water?

I use Nursery Water for my son to mix with his formula...but there has been a time when we were out longer than expected and only had enough water for 1 bottle, and needed 2. (I did have the formula powder, just not the water for the 2nd bottle.) I bought natural spring water from Starbucks and used that with his formula. He never got sick or had any reactions to it. In a pinch I don't think it would be a problem as long as it natural spring water and NOT tap water.

If you meant to give just plain water...no...babies should have water only mixes with the formula.

A friend of mine did a test on spring water from
the bottles.. He says, some are full of chemicals
and some are not good for consumption. He thinks
it is safer to drink distill water. He says water
doesn't give you vitamins and minerals but
food does. So the less chemicals we ingest
in our body the better he said.

Most spring water is mineral water. Too much minerals in baby's diet could actually cause dehydration. Babies should *not* get any water before 6 months old, and even then it shouldn't be mineral water.

And you shouldn't use distilled water, either, even after 6 months. It is *pure* water (no minerals whatsoever), and it can deplete baby of the minerals she/he needs. Only "regular" water is suitable because it contains just the right amount of minerals--not too much and not too little.

You can give them distilled water which can be purchased at any food store like wal-mart.. it normaly has a baby on the lable... you don't want to do plain tap water or spring water because they have alot of minnerals in them.. distilled water simply is boiled water that is boiled at a very high temp..

I heard somewhere that you aren't supposed to give babies water that has been distilled because of a mineral it is either lacking or has too much of. Is the spring water distilled? And that you aren't supposed to give a whole lot of water to babies that young anyway. Maybe just an ounce or two of non-distilled water.

bottled spring water contains too many added minerals and vitamins that can be harmful to a child before 1 year. cool boiled tap water instead.

NO. You shouldn't be giving any water at all to newborns as it is not necessary and may actually be harmful. Newborns get all their fluid needs from breastmilk or formula. Giving water to newborns may make their electrolyte balance out of whack and this is not good.

Also, giving water to newborns can make them full with the water and not want to take milk. This is bad since newborns need every nutrients in the milk for brain development.
