American dollar, Canadian dollar, British pounds or the Euro are all readily accepted in jamaica. The vendors usually give you about three dollars less on the USD dollar. I was there earlier this month and the exchange rate on the USD is around $65.50 but most vendors give you around $62 (still not too bad).

Jamaica also uses Visa / Mastercard. If you use Visa / Mastercard tell the cashier to ring up your total in Jamaican currency and charge it to your card. This way when the bank in the US clears the credit card transaction you will get the going bank rate (which is better).

Another option, you can go to a bank in Jamaica and change your currency at the bank rate which is higher than the vendors' rate. Overall either way you spend your money you will get a good deal on your purchases. The Jamaicans are generally nice people and will bargain with you.

Have a safe and fun trip!

I have been there several times. The best currency is dollars. No one seems to want the "J". As a hint when you buy ANYTHING demand a better price then they are offering to you. And I do mean ANYTHING. A soda, a meal, a taxi ride, a hotel... If someone tells you $10 offer them $3. Also when you take money have an arrangement of bills (take $1's, $10's... don't just take $100's) the reason is that if you get a good deal you don't want it shattered by the fact that the person "doesn't have change"(yea right) But the money that you take make sure that it is brand new bills. You will get a better exchange rate. Also if you exchange money DO NOT DO IT AT THE AIRPORT!!! You can find people that will exchange money for you for a better rate. But that aside you should really only need dollars.

EPI hit the nail on the head. We just got back and transfered only $100 American to Jamiacan...boy I wish we didn't. They did not even give you prices in Jamaican only American. You also seem to get more by flashing the american $$ then the Jamaican $$.

EVERYTHING is negotable there...which can get old, but it is. They usually will tell you higher in american but go lower and you will no doubt get it lower. Just don't exchange it's not worth it, even at the resorts everything is priced American. Go to the bank and get $100 worth of $1 bills...sounds silly but my friends did and they had no problem getting stuff way cheap. Not to mention if you pull out a $20 they will try to get the whole bill and say no change. So take lots of smaller demoniations. If you want Jamaican cash as a souvenier buy something small in a store and they will have to give you Jamaican change.

US Dollars are the best, because they are easier to change back into pounds if you have any left after your trip.

However make sure that any prices you are quoted whilst out there are in US dollars and not Caribbean dollars.
