unfortunately i don't have a garden :(
but i do like lillies.... though sometimes the smell can be overpowering if there are too many of them.
i like my aunts garden as she has a patio with lots of colourful pots with different plants/trees/ flowers in.
and she grows vegetables too, its just a really nice little garden
plus my daughter loves smelling the flowers and helping pick the vegetables!

I'm in the med and would give anything for a nosey round a cottage garden right now. i have many favourite plants for many different reasons, but one of my favourites out here is a succulent called Aptenia cordifolia. It is an excellent ground cover plant which has indefinite growth. Its growth is lush, it needs very little water, its red flowers attract pollinating insects and it acts as a living mulch retaining moisture in the soil. oh and its easy to propagate. Its only problem being is it can be a little invasive.

I often have the same experience you described. I love my gardens and find them so therapeutic. There's a chore for every mood - when I am kind of cranky, I pull weeds; when I have lots of energy, I dig a new bed; when I feel creative, I plant and try new combinations of color, heights, and textures.
Anyway, some of my favorite flowers are sunflowers, because they come in so many different colors and forms, always look cheerful, and make nice cut flowers; perennial phlox, because they smell great; peonies, because of their beautiful and fragrant flowers and because they bring back childhood memories; dianthus plumaris, because they have cool frilly flowers and a beautiful scent; and Crystal Palace lobelia, because they are an intense blue that I love, and they are great for edging the flower beds and growing in containers.
I just came back from walking in my front yard and have to add some other favorites: Hydrangeas, because they add so much color over such a long season; Blue Dawn morning glory, because they are that intense blue that I love and are doing a great job covering a less-than-beautiful fence (I may reconsider my love for it if I can't keep it from overtaking my trees, though!); Canterbury bells, for having such an interesting flower form and a variety of shades of white, pinks, and blues; foxgloves, because the flowers are so subtly colored; sweet peas, for color and fragrance; and old-fashioned single flowered hollyhocks, which add good height and color and remind me of when my sister and I used to pick the blossoms and pretend that they were ballerinas....

Have you ever been to Saville Gardens near Windsor? Stunning at this time of year.
I prefer pockets of different flowers with a similar colour. So a spread of purple, a patch of yellow and a section of red. I don't mind which flowers though.

I live in Michigan where it newly developed, My apt faces the back lots that have been left for open field. The flowers that grow here are spectacular, they are wild and grow willynilly, plus I feed the birds so they give me quite a laugh as they compete. Redwinged blackbirds are quite the aggressors here, but the finches and mourning dove families get their turn. I throw a lot of seed on the ground so it mixes with the other growth. Lots of dark brown, yellow, white, purple, all shades of green. sandy soil because they scraped off the top.

I love daffodils. They are one of the first flowers to appear in my garden and after a long snowy winter the sight of their bright colors is just refreshing to my soul.

I love yew trees. Just do, some of them were around at the times of the crusades. I like long-lived trees. They have some sort of permanence about them.
