Its very difficult, Benjamin Franklin tried it and he was only partially successful over many years. He had a table made up with the days of the week at the top and the virtues he wanted to encourage along the left side and each day he would tally how many times he lost his control for each virtue.

Are you talking about losing your cool in a heated situation, or are you talking about resisting temptations?
If you are referring to the former, then realize that you have a choice. You can choose to let a situation get the better of you, and let it own you, or you can choose to not let it take away your power. Keeping your composure is tough sometimes, but it can be extremely satisfying. Especially if someone is trying to push your buttons and you don't give them what they want.
If you're referring to resisting temptation, remember that someone is always watching whether it be your conscience or God (if you believe). No matter what, your conscience remembers the choices you have made and you have to hang on to it forever. Before giving in, remember that it is your choice, and that you are in control. What if the tables were turned? Also think about karma, and can you afford to reap what you sow.
