First install iTunes on your computer. When you connect your iPod to your computer (via USB) , you can synchronise your iTunes music onto your iPod.
For videos (if you have the video iPod), you need additional software, such as QuickTime Pro, which can be bought on the apple.com website (in fact, i bought it today myself ;-)
