i used sand to put on the grass seed the birds don't peck at it and grows quite quickly ...plants and woodchip ..a rockery ..trellis to section off bad parts or to hide clutter..scour papers for free items or ebay for cheap items ...local car boot sales have alsorts you could turn into features

You will want to put down a good layer of dirt. Get a top quality mix that includes some sort of humus or peat, anything to help promote good growth and water retention. Then buy sod, the best way to go, you can lay it yourself. Water very well, fert. after a while to promote growth. Do it right the first time and you will have a great lawn. Try not to make a huge area of lawn though, do beds with lots of mulch (shredded bark is good), again with good dirt and plant some beautiful things.
Check out Sunset's garden book, it is the "bible" for gardeners. Tells how to take care of plants, lawns, etc. Then look at some good books on planning a garden/yard, also by Sunset. You can get some great ideas and planning is the key. Have fun!

use grass seeds. u can get a box cheap. my dad did the bottom of the garden with them and it worked well.

purchase something like Otho around-up and spray it on the grass. Grass is greater well-off to weed killer even greater advantageous than weeds are. or you're able to desire to easily dig it up and ninety 5% of it won't come back. be sure you get the roots. stable success

save some of the sand to mix w/ the soil to grow roses.. they do well in sandy soil w/ morning sun and water every other day
