It is better if you locate it near the return air grill. All the air in the house will pass through the return air back to the furnace/air conditioner. You might see if the air register is partially closed in the kitchen. Hope it helps.

Hall's aren't the best places for thermostat's since you don't spend much time in the hallway. The heat from the oven in the kitchen may cause the thermostat to act up as well. The thermostat would be better off in the living room or dining room.

Your problem may be insufficient air delivery to the kitchen area. You might want to consider adding a duct run - if possible. Thermostats have traditionally been located in hallways because return air grills were normally located in hallways. Having an HVAC company add ductwork would be more expensive than buying a small window unit for the kitchen. Of course you would then have to put up with the noise. Good luck.

The thermostat should be close to the return register of the furnace, which is usually in a hall or similar open area. It should be in an area with good air flow and that is not subject to other influences (like ovens or sunlight from windows).

its normal for temps to vary room to room in a house +/-5degrees or so. the best thing to do is get a digital type. if you dont have one allready. they save power and they are alot more reliable than the analog ones.
