Go with #1's suggestion, get a specially made product for irons. There was a big article in the Indy paper last week about choosing the perfect iron, etc., and even this article said that they best way to clean the sole plate is to purchase the cleaner.
Good luck!

Yeah, there is a special stick of something you can buy in Woolworths. You rub it on and all the burnt stuff wipes off (apparantly).
I've never used it - I hate ironing and would rather walk around with a shirt that looked like a cabbage leaf than do any. Ha ha ha.

you forgot to say what is on it?
sticky? cold iron use: Baking soda 1 tsp to 2 tsp vinegar on cloth/rub,dry with clean cloth. heat related plastic sticky? warm iron, place on surface that has porous surface like a pan cleaner/rub it off.
To revive an iron and make it slide, wax paper or wax candle on paper towel, place warm iron on this until it becomes smooth. Never use anything abrasive on your iron because if it scratches it, the iron plate will scratch the
finery of your wardrobe. Never use anything but distilled water inside your iron. To clean the inside, if its steaming out brown drops that get on your clothing, your setting is not hot enough.
But you must have used something other than distilled water inside your iron.

Unplug it the Iron Use scouring powder when the iron is warm. Scrub using a damp cloth or soft brush and you are done.
