Let me give you an evolutionary scale of all the primate:
Spider-monkeys; orangutans; gorillas; humans. Modern man has been around for 20 000 years. The evolution of humans began with the extinction of the dinosaurs about 65 mil. years ago, so I guess some gorillas stopped evolving at about the middle of the Cretaceous period.

From msn encarta: "Fossils and genetic data indicate that the ancestral line of gorillas and chimpanzees split from that of humans about 5 million to 10 million years ago."

Information from a 2003 paper in the Journal of Human Evolution, using molecular data from protein and DNA sequences, places the divergence of the gorilla lineage from the human lineage at 6-8 million years ago.

Gorillas are getting smarter -- I ran across several studies showing that wild gorillas are starting to use tools. Not like hammers & screwdrivers :-) One gorilla was seen using a stick to gauge the depth of a stream before trying to cross it.
